Look Carefully – You May Be Treading On Buried Treasure And Never Know It

by Oliver Woods on May.11, 2010, under Home Based Business

Sometimes its easy to overlook opportunity even when it stares you in the face. The story of Ali Hafed, a well-off farmer in the Indus Valley, provides a poignant example of a man who narrowly missed the buried treasure. His story is entitled, “Acres of Diamonds.”

Ali Hafed enjoyed a comfortable life style, but was tempted to sell what he had in the vain hope gaining that which he had not. Encouraged by an old Hindu priest, he did just that and wandered the world for many years in the pursuit of buried treasure, all to no avail. At last his meager funds were exhausted and he died of despair at his own hand in a far away land.

Acres of Diamonds

One day the old priest stopped by Ali Hafed’s old farmstead to visit the new owner and noticed a shiny, rough-hewn stone displayed on the mantelpiece. Recognizing it as a diamond in the rough, he enquired hopefully if Ali Hafed had returned successful from his quest. No, said the new owner, that is just a fascinating rock specimen that I picked up out in the field. At that instant he realized the terrible truth of what had happened to Ali Hafed.

Pastor Russell Conwell used the story of buried treasure to make the point that we should “dig in our own back yard,” “Had Ali Hafed remained at home and dug in his own cellar, or underneath his own wheat fields or in his own garden, instead of wretchedness, starvation, and death by suicide in a strange land, he would have had ‘acres of diamonds.’ For every acre of that old farm, yes, every shovelful, afterward revealed gems which since have decorated the crowns of monarchs.” Like so many, Ali Hafed did not value what he had when he had it.

Sadly there is an American counterpart to Ali Hafed. We don’t have his name, but we do know he was the former owner of what came to be known as Sutter’s Mill during the California gold rush. This man sold the land to Sutter with the goal of seeking for gold further South. Sutter’s gold strike came ironically at the hand of his young daughter who was playing with some sand before the family fire one evening. Sutter noticed the glitter of gold in the falling sand and the rest is history.

Thirty-eight million dollars of gold was eventually mined from Sutter’s Mill. The man who sold the farm in search of gold could have had everything he wanted for the simple taking had he only opened his eyes and began panning for gold. Again, the buried treasure lay just beneath his feet.

Lead Into Gold

Is there a moral to these stories? There most definitely is. By looking at things from a slightly different perspective you may be able to make lemonade from the lemons that life has dealt you. By adopting a new perspective it may be possible for you to turn real estate lead into real estate gold.

Consider the fact that there are a lot of houses on the market today that may be purchased for pennies on the dollar either at short sale or as bank owned real estate (REO – Real Estate Owned). Banks are willing to make huge concessions just to get the properties off their books, because REO properties contribute to their insolvency. That’s a couple of ways you can turn real estate lead into real estate gold and discover the buried treasure that you seek.

The Alchemist’s goal of turning lead into gold had a philosophical significance in terms of transforming the Alchemist himself to a higher state of being. A prolonged period of experimental discipline was required to realize the goal. Even the great physicist, Isaac Newton, was consumed by the alchemist’s quest, as recorded in many pages of unpublished documentation on the subject.

In like manner there may be a way for you to turn your real estate albatross into a real estate bonanza almost by magic. Real estate alchemy, if you will. What looks like a shaft of fool’s gold may contain buried treasure that is, in fact, good as gold. Get started now by following the links below.

Ways To Reduce Your Carbon Foot Print With Sash Window Draught Proofing

by Craig Beck on May.09, 2010, under Home Based Business

If you live in an older house with sash windows it’s sort of a mixed blessing. The windows may be beautiful and since they have been around for decades (or centuries) they are no doubt steeped in tradition and character. But they are also old and have probably lost some of their efficiency and functionality. With new advancements, however, it’s become amazingly easy to reduce your carbon foot print with sash window draught proofing.

You have probably seen advertisements from window replacement shops touting how great new window technology has become. Their position is that it is best to remove older sash windows and to replace them with new, ‘modern’ units. They offer double-paned, gas-filled vinyl (plastic) framed windows as the alternative.

The truth is most older windows are worth saving almost always. When given the choice of repair or replacement, repairing is almost always best. Replacement should be used as a last resort. It is more expensive and the results are rarely as pleasing to the eye.

Old windows were built to last as long as the house they were installed on and the house is still there, right? But old windows get tired and worn out and need to be maintained (just like us!). Most people who live in really old houses have NEVER seen their windows work properly, as they were meant to. But that can be fixed.

Paint may need to be scraped and sash cords may need to be replaced. Counter weights may need balancing and pulleys may need servicing. But the most important thing to complete on older sash windows is draught proofing.

To reduce your carbon foot print with sash window draught proofing is both easy and cost effective. Not only will draught proofing stop the draughts, it will also cut down on the dust and noise too. It can also stop your windows from rattling (just in case that’s one of your problems). It’s a very good idea.

Sash window repairs London experts provide make your historic home more attractive and energy efficient. A sash window renovation is an excellent choice when upgrading your home or business structure.
